We heard a few months ago that Matthew McConaughey had joined an upcoming Illumination animated film, and we now officially have the details about the project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, McConaughey will star in Sing, a new animated musical about anthropomorphic animals in a singing competition. McConaughey will play a koala named Buster Moon, a struggling theater owner who decides to host the contest in order to turn his life around.
Also starring as the contestants are Seth MacFarlane as a mouse, Tori Kelly as an elephant, Reese Witherspoon as a pig, Joel Egerton as a gorilla, and Scarlett Johansson as a porcupine.
Sing will apparently live up to the title in a big way, as Universal also says the movie will feature 85 songs.
This will be Illumination Entertainment's second film of 2016 after The Secret Life Of Pets, which is scheduled for July 2016. The studio is best known for creating the Despicable Me franchise, which has collectively grossed over $2 billion at the box office. The newest spinoff, Minions, is one of the biggest films of 2015, taking home $1.1 billion worldwide and becoming the eighth highest grossing animated film of all time.
Sing will hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2016.
