Nickelodeon is bringing back many of its classic shows, and Hey Arnold will be the first to return.
According to Variety, Nickelodeon is officially working on a new Hey Arnold television movie. This will not be a reboot, but rather a continuation that resolves unanswered plotlines from the original series, including what happened to Arnold's parents.
This is part of a broader plan the network has to revive many of its golden era franchises, although Nickelodeon has not specified any projects other than Hey Arnold.
“Kids who grew up on these characters are now of the age that they are having kids and families themselves,” explained Nickelodeon Group President Russell Hicks. “Our library has come to fruition and it’s time for it to start coming back to life.”
Hicks went on to say that these revivals will be targeted mainly at today's kids rather than viewers who grew up with the originals. This Hey Arnold movie will hope to draw in children who have no recollection of the series.
The network is also considering bringing back some of its live action shows as well, meaning we could see reboots of series like Clarissa Explains It All and Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide.
It's a pretty great time to be a fan of classic Nickelodeon. The network also recently launched a programming block called The Splat dedicated to airing reruns of old cartoons, and there has been talks of an Avengers-style crossover movie featuring many of the classic characters.
Between this and the return of Full House, The X-Files and Twin Peaks, it looks like the next few years will basically be the return of the 1990s.
