OutKast has revealed that the Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake Super Bowl halftime performance scandal in 2004 might not have happened if they didn’t t turn down the request to perform.
Big Boi reveals it was Andre 3000 that turned down an invitation to perform during that year’s Super Bowl halftime show because he didn’t want to shorten their songs to fit the timeslot they were given.
"[Andre] didn’t want to cut the songs, he wanted to do the full songs. It was like, 'Nah, can’t do it,'" Big Boi recalled to ESPN’s Dan LeBatard Show. “Hopefully they invite us back,” he added.
The two songs they were going to perform were “The Way You Move" and "Hey Ya! but Andre wouldn’t perform anything but their full versions.
Instead of OutKast, Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson, Nelly, P. Diddy and Kid Rock performed. Jackson’s nipple accidentally became exposed at the end Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body.”
Outkast returned to the festival circuit last year to celebrate 20 years of being a duo.
