Quentin Tarantino went on Real Time with Bill Maher in his latest attempt to clarify his comments on police. The filmmaker found a defender in Maher, who said the situation reminded him of the response to Maher’s comments after 9/11.

Back in 2001, Maher’s ABC show was cancelled after he said that the 9/11 hijackers were not the cowards that many people called them. Maher started off his conversation with Tarantino last night by telling Tarantino that what is going on with him today reminds him of that situation. As Mediate notes, Maher said that in both situations, people “lied” about what they originally said.

Tarantino agreed, suggesting that calling him a “cop-hater” is “slander” because he never said that. What Tarantino did say last month at a rally was, “When I see murder I cannot stand by. And I have to call the murdered the murdered and I have to call the murderers the murderers.”

When Tarantino spoke to the Los Angeles Times earlier this week, he also insisted that he doesn’t think all police officers are murders. Still, the largest police union in the country said it has a “surprise” for Tarantino and many unions have already planned boycotts of his new film, The Hateful Eight.

“We need to talk to the cops about this, we need to get to the problem,” Tarantino told Maher Friday night, notes The Daily Beast. “We need to bring this to the table.” Tarantino said he would continue talking about the issue of police violence.

Here’s the video of the interview, which was posted by the Daily Beast.
