J.J. Abrams is so good when it comes to talking without saying anything really important that he might as well become a politician. The filmmaker did talk about Luke Skywalker’s absence from Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers, but unsurprisingly didn’t reveal where he is.
“No one forgot about him!” Abrams told Entertainment Weekly. “We were hoping people would care, but there are a lot of things that are not on the poster, as busy as the poster is. Certainly Luke is a very important aspect of the story.”
Luke hasn’t been seen in any of the trailers and was even missing from the poster. We do know that Mark Hamill is returning to play the character and it has been speculated that the cloaked person touching R2-D2 in one image we’ve seen is Luke.
While Abrams didn’t reveal what exactly Luke is doing, he did talk about how people see him in the Star Wars universe, over 30 years after Return of the Jedi.
“t was the thing that struck me the hardest, which was the idea that doing a story that took place nearly 40 years after Jedi meant that there would be a generation for whom Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia would be as good as myth,” Abrams said. “They’d be as old and as mythic as the tale of King Arthur. They would be characters who they may have heard of, but maybe not. They’d be characters who they might believe existed, or just sounded like a fairy tale.”
EW revealed that the lightsaber Luke lost in The Empire Strikes Back - which previously belonged to Anakin Skywalker - is the one we’ve seen Finn (John Boyega) carrying. That lightsaber will be important in figuring out where Luke is.
Abrams wouldn’t say if Hamill’s comments from a Dinner For Five episode that Abrams was also in had any impact on The Force Awakens. In that episode, Hamill said that he really pushed for Luke to turn evil in Return of the Jedi.
So, we won’t actually know what’s up with Luke until Dec. 18, when we finally see the movie.
Other bits of info from EW include Princess Leia’s current title, who Andy Serkis is playing and what’s going on with Lupita Nyong’o’s character.
