The Icemen is back, or at least he thinks he will be. Val Kilmer wrote on Facebook that he has been offered to return for Top Gun 2.

Kilmer - or at least whoever runs his Facebook page - might have been a little overexcited. Last night, he made it sound like he had already signed on to make the long-gestating sequel. But he then edited it, noting that he just got excited by a phone call with his agent.

“This is a long way off so calm down,” he told his fans. “This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun... An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent...”

It is true that Top Gun 2 is coming close to fruition, with both producer Jerry Bruckheimer and original star Tom Cruise ready to come back. In September 2014, Paramount and Skydance hired writer Justin Marks (Jungle Book). In June, Skydance’s David Ellison outlined the plot and Cruise sounded really excited about the project in July.

However, the project is still without a director after Tony Scott’s death in August 2012. There’s been no word on who Paramount might hire to helm the new movie.

Top Gun made stars out of Cruise and Kilmer, who played Maverick and Iceman, respectively. The film celebrates its 30th anniversary next year.

I just got offered #topgun2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script..."It's starring Gene...
