Yale University has come under fire from students after a fraternity hosted a "white girls only" party that turned away black women over Halloween weekend.
The controversy began when a Yale sophomore posted a message on Facebook stating "I'd just like to take a moment to give a shoutout to the member of Yale's SAE chapter who turned away a group of girls from their party last night, explaining that admittance was on a "White Girls Only" basis; and a belated shoutout to the SAE member who turned me and my friends away for the same reason last year. God Bless the USA."
This lead to other students speaking out about incidents of harassment and racially charged comments.
Tensions have been building around campus since the appearance of symbols that referenced slavery and over the handling of an email from the associate master of Silliman College that told students not to take offense at insensitive Halloween costumes. Silliman College is one of Yale's 12 undergraduate residential communities.
According to the Washington Post Yale's president met with a large group of minority students in a closed-door meeting Thursday night to apologize for the university's handling of the situation and for failing to make them feel safe on campus. He told the students "We failed you. I think we have to be a better university. I think we have to do a better job."
