For a while there it seemed like the once-coveted hoverboards were set to be the biggest-selling item this holiday season.. That is, until safety concerns mounted and now Amazon has pulled some of them from its site.

Re/code reported that Amazon decided to pull the popular sellers after questioning hoverboard maker, Swagway, about the product’s safety standards.

The manufacturer then said that Amazon sent out a statement saying that all hoverboard sellers must “provide documentation demonstrating that all hoverboards you list are compliant with applicable safety standards, including UN 38.3 (battery), UL 1642 (battery), and UL 60950-1 (charger).”

Swagway said it meets those standards and is thankful that Amazon is pulling those that do not.

Viral videos have been shown all over the internet of some hoverboards actually catching fire due to a problem with the device's battery. The problem even cautioned many airlines, which have now ban them on flights.

So even if you’ve been nice instead of naughty this year, Santa may not be bringing you a hoverboard until it can be deemed that they are in fact safe.
