Banksy, the world-famous graffiti artist, showed his support for Syrian refugees with a piece of art that features Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. The piece showed up on a wall on a refugee camp in Calais, France.
The piece shows the late Jobs carrying a back over his shoulder and an Apple computer in his other hand. As the Guardian notes, the piece is a clear reference to the fact that Jobs was the son of an immigrant. His father moved from Syria to the U.S. after World War II.
“We’re often led to believe migration is a drain on the country’s resources but Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian migrant,” Banksy said in a rare statement. “Apple is the world’s most profitable company, it pays over $7bn (£4.6bn) a year in taxes – and it only exists because they allowed in a young man from Homs.”
Banksy has shown support for refugees in the past. The artist’s ambitious Dismaland park project included a pond with dead bodies in a boat to represent the refugees coming to Europe across the Mediterranean. Pussy Riot also performed a new song about the refugee crisis on the day the park closed.
