On Oct. 27, Jessica Tom released her first novel, Food Whore, with the William Morrow imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. The book believably delves into the worlds of four star restaurants and high fashion, making it the perfect last minute gift for the foodie or fashionista in your life.
Tia is a graduate student in the Food Studies program at NYU. She’d do anything to work with her idol, former New York Times food writer and cookbook author Helen Lansky. While trying to make a good impression, Tia meets Helen’s underling, Michael Saltz, who offers her the chance to work with him first, and then transfer to Helen. The catch is, Tia will be his secret ghostwriter.
Michael is a restaurant critic who has lost his sense of taste and needs someone to eat and describe the food for him. Tia is not allowed to share what she does with anyone. In return, Michael will reward her not only with an internship with Helen once his taste returns, but also an unlimited credit account at Bergdorf Goodman and free meals at fine restaurants. Will the position be her ticket to the top, or will Tia regret the somewhat shady deal?
Tom’s story is an interesting look into the restaurant and food writing scene in New York City. It shows how cutthroat the business can be, leaving Tia to wonder if it’s worth hurting the ones she loves to make it to the top. Can Tia rise above being an unknown ghostwriter and make it on her own, or will she be stuck in anonymity forever, selling her soul for high fashion?
