It has been awhile since we’ve heard anything about James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, but the director finally gave an update on the incredibly long process. After all, it’s been over six years already since the original Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time.
Cameron has plans for three more Avatar films, although he did once say that he has an idea for a fifth film. Right now, the focus is on those first three though.
“I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now,” Cameron recently told Entertainment Weekly. “Just refining.”
Cameron also explained that the characters and design are all set for the future films, he just needs to make sure that he has the right story to go them. These designs don’t make the sequels any easier though.
“Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”
Cameron is partly to blame for keeping our expectations so high. Last year, he promised in an interview with Empire Magazine that the films are “gonna be bitchin.’”
Avatar 2 won’t hit theaters until 2017 at the earliest, which would be eight years after the first film hit theaters.
