Former President Jimmy Carter stunned churchgoers at his Plains, Georgia church on Sunday by announcing his 28-year-old grandson’s death just hours after it happened.

Carter arrived at Maranatha Baptist Church late Sunday morning, which hardly ever happens. He began to tell his Bible study class that his grandson left dinner early because he wasn’t feeling well. “So he went to his room to lay on the bed and when they went to see if he was OK and his heart quit beating,” Carter said, reports USA Today.

Jeremy Carter was then rushed to the hospital around 1:30 a.m. His heart stopped again and there was an attempt to revive him with CPR. However, they were not successful.

“He was just 28 and a very wonderful young man who we loved very much,” Carter said.

“(President Carter) was shaken,” Rev. Jeremy Shoulta told CNN. “He was obviously sad although he was able to teach and he was able to present the lesson as well as he always has. But it was apparent to everyone there that this was weighing on him very heavily.”

Carter, 91, said during his class over the summer that he was diagnosed with brain cancer. But on Dec. 6, he announced that he was cancer free.

Jeremy Carter was the second child of Jeff and Annette Carter.
