Singer Josh Groban is finally set to make his debut on Broadway. He will star in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, a musical based on a part of War and Peace.
The show was first staged in fall 2012, then was transferred to a custom venue in the Meatpacking District in 2013, notes Broadway World. The venue was moved to the Theater District and performances continued until spring 2014. Now, it is heading to Broadway with Groban, beginning in September 2016.
Great Comet was created by Dave Malloy and directed by Rachel Chavkin. According to the production’s website, Groban will play Pierre in the show, which is based on a 70-page part of Leo Tolstoy’s famous novel. The rest of the main cast has yet to be announced.
“I'm honored and excited to join The Great Comet family as it lands on the Great White Way,” Groban said in a statement. “I've admired this brilliant piece of work and its creators for a long time. It's an imaginative and immersive show and a role that is fascinating to me on many levels. I'm thrilled to call it my first on Broadway and I hope everyone will join us.”
Groban released his first album in 2001 and released a collection of covers of stage songs in April. He’s also done acting work on television, most recently appearing in The Office and The Muppets.
