The social media presence of the music world turned it up a notch last night after MPs voted to launch airstrikes against terrorist group ISIS in Syria.
Tweeting livid responses with “Don’t Bomb Syria” and #NotInMyName, music stars Brian May, Skepta, and Charlotte Church were among the musicians to voice their disapproval of the UK military decision.
Singer-songwriter Charlotte Church live tweeted Wednesday’s debate in Parliament on military involvement in Syria, responding to the verdict of the MPs’ vote with “So sad…just so sad. #NotInMyName. To all those who voted for bombs, I wish you a good night’s sleep…”
With a majority of 397 MPs in favor of sending British airstrike teams into Syria, the music world has plenty to say.
“No matter what we tweet, post or say, the system is gonna do what the f-ck it wants,” grime artist Skepta wrote in a series of tweets. “As much pain as I’m in when I hear these nasty things happening around the world, I’m never surprised. Evidently the fight won’t stop. We’re still out here voicing our options but at the same time, man ain’t deluded.”
Skepta, also an artist in social media, put his foot down earlier in the week, posting to his Instagram a picture of blood-soaked fists, captioned with “Don’t Bomb Syria.” Queen guitarist Brian May offered his opinions in length on his website after comparing Britain’s deployment in Iraq in 2003, writing: “I believe going in to bomb indeterminate targets in Syria will be the biggest mistake Britain has ever made.”
