A list of the top baby names for 2015 has just been released by Nameberry with just days left until the new year.
For girls, the top baby name was Esme, which is from a short story by J. D. Salinger called For Esme – With Love and Squalor. For boys, Kai was the top baby name of the year.
"Esme and Kai are both names we've seen quietly gathering steam over the past few years," Nameberry creator Pamela Satran told ABC News. "Esme has the classic literary credibility of other girls' names that are newly stylish.”
She added of Esme, in addition to its literary connection to Salinger, “It's also got a Twilight connection, via the vampire matriarch in the Twilight books."
"Kai is multi-ethnic," Satran went on to explain. "It means sea in Hawaiian and also exists as a name in Japanese, Maori, and Navajo, and also has a connection to children's literature as the name of the little boy who is enchanted in The Snow Queen.”
Rounding out the top five for girls is Evelyn, Mia, Abigail and Luna. For boys, it’s Austin, Lachlan, Graham and Everett.
