Authorities are investigating the death of Stephen “Greg” Fisk, who was elected mayor of Alaska’s capital city, Juneau, in October.
NBC News reported that police got a call around 3:30 p.m. local time on Monday from the politician’s adult son after he found the body. Fisk was pronounced dead at the scene and although investigators have not yet said if the death is suspicious they are trying to piece together exactly what happened to the 70-year-old.
Because Fisk was recently elected to office, some believe that he could have been specifically targeted.
"JDP is aware of rumors that an assault occurred in connection with Fisk's death," a statement from the Juneau Police Department said. "Those rumors are speculation. Detectives are actively investigating facts of the incident and all evidence is being preserved and documented."
Fisk was a resident of Alaska since it became a state in 1959.
Governor Bill Walker offered his condolences via Twitter and said that Fisk “will be remembered for his dedicated service to the community of Juneau.”
