Using a trend started by Beyoncé, which proved to be successful, Prince surprised-released his HITNRUN Phase Two album just in time for the holidays.
Us Weekly reported that the entertainer behind Purple Rain released his latest album with no warning or press on Tidal over the weekend.
“Please everyone purchase the product after listening,” Prince tweeted, with a link to the 12-track album on Jay-Z’s streaming site.
Spin noted that HITNRUN Phase Two is a continuation of the HITNRUN Phase One LP the artist released in September. In fact, the first song off the new album is titled “Baltimore” and listed as track No. 12 after the Phase One last song “June.”
Prince wasn’t the only one to surprise-release an album last week. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter, Willow, also took a page out of Queen Bey’s book and surprise-dropped her album Ardipithecus.
For Prince, this is his 38th album as he has been making hits since the ‘70s.
