There’s a chance that Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight will be the first film you go to the theater to see in 2016. The Weinstein Company announced today that it has moved up the film’s wide release date to Jan. 1.
The original plan for the film’s release was to put it out in around 100 theaters on Christmas Day in 70mm Ultra Panavision. The rest of the country wouldn’t get to see the standard, digital version until Jan. 8.
However, in an attempt to get some extra money, the Weinstein Company has rescheduled the wide release for Jan. 1.
The Hateful Eight is the latest film from Tarantino, who won a second Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his previous film, Django Unchained. Like that movie, The Hateful Eight is expected to be up for Oscars, but its late release date appears to be hurting it so far. The film was completely shut out at the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations and only earned three Golden Globe nominations: Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Best Screenplay and Best Score (Ennio Morricone).
Like Django, The Hateful Eight is a Western, albeit one with snow. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Demian Bichir and Walton Goggins.
