Rapper King Louie was shot in the back of the head Wednesday afternoon in Chicago. His management said that he is recovering and has been talking.

King Louie, whose real name is Louis Johnson Jr. and also currently performs under the name King L, was shot while he was in a vehicle in the Southwest Side at around 3:30 p.m. Police told the Chicago Sun-Times that the rapper was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. His reps said that he is “awake and talking.”

Johnson, 27, is an important rapper in Chicago and is credited with coming up with the phrase “Chiraq” to describe the violence in the city. As The Chicago Tribune notes, he also made an appearance on Kanye West’s Yeezus.

Police sources told the Tribune that someone approached Johnson’s vehicle and shot him in the left site of his head.

The Tribune reports that the shooting was just one of several incidents of violence throughout Chicago on the day before Christmas Eve. Two men were killed in separate incidents and five others were wounded.
