Scott Weiland, the former lead singer of The Stone Temple Pilots, died Thursday at 48. While he did struggle with drug abuse, his wife reportedly does not think he was doing drugs at the time of his death.
Weiland’s death was announced on his social media accounts. The statement only confirmed that he died in his sleep on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was on tour with his current band, The Wildabouts.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed to the Star Tribune that Weiland died around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night in a tour bus just outside a hotel. When police arrived, he was already dead.
Jamie Weiland, Weiland’s wife, spoke to The Los Angeles Times briefly Thursday. “I can’t deal with this right now. It’s true,” she said of her husband’s death.
No cause of death was announced, as police are still investigating.
Jamie Weiland also told TMZ that her husband hasn’t been doing drugs for years and only drank socially. She said that there was an agreement among Weiland’s current band that they avoid drugs. Other musicians told TMZ that Weiland had been doing crack cocaine this week, but Jamie denies this.
Weiland was the lead singer for The Stone Temple Pilots from 1986 through 2013, singing the hits “Plush” and “Interstate Love Song.” He also lead the supergroup Velvet Revolver from 2003 to 2008 and recorded several solo albums. He toured extensively with the Wildabouts and recorded an album with them.
