Williams beat out several candidates, including the Kansas City Royals, who won their first World Series title in 35 years, and American Pharoah, the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 37 years.

Steph Curry, who helped lead the Golden State Warriors to their first NBA Finals championship since 1975, was also a candidate. Carli Lloyd, who scored the first U.S. hat trick in Women’s World Cup history, could have also been considered.

But in the end, Sports Illustrated went with Williams, the most dominant tennis player of the 21st century. She won 53 of her 56 matches and three of the four Grand Slam titles. Overall, Williams, who is pictured on the cover sitting on a throne, has 21 Grand Slam titles.
