The animated Spider-Man movie Sony is still hoping to make is coming out later than anticipated.
The film, which will be directed by The LEGO Movie team Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, was supposed to come out on July 20, 2018. But Sony announced a wave of release dates for animated projects, including a new one for Spider-Man. According to Exhibitor Relations, the movie is now coming out on Dec. 21, 2018.
There’s still no word on what this movie is supposed to be about or when Miller and Lord are supposed to find time to make it. The two, who also helmed Sony’s 21 Jump Street movies, are hired to make Disney’s Star Wars stand-alone movie about a young Han Solo.
A third movie Spidey, played by Tom Holland, will make his debut in Captain America: Civil War after Sony and Marvel made a deal last year. Holland will be getting a live action solo movie scheduled for July 2017, which will be directed by Jon Watts. It doesn’t make too much sense for Sony to expect audiences to want a new live-action Spidey and an animated Spidey, so it will be interesting to see if the animated film comes to fruition.
Exhibitor Relations reported that Sony also scheduled an animated Peter Rabbit film for March 23, 2018 and The Emoji Movie for Aug. 11, 2017. Sony is also behind The Angry Birds movie that comes out on May 20.
