Star Wars: The Force Awakens has another record. The film, which hit $1 billion in record time, has also hit $100 million from IMAX screenings in record time.
IMAX said today that the Disney film hit $106 million worldwide from IMAX theaters in only 12 days. Universal’s Jurassic World had the previous record with 18 days in release. However, The Force Awakens has made its money without help from Chinese audiences, since it doesn’t open in China until Jan. 9. Jurassic World was released in China the same weekend it hit theaters in the U.S. in June.
In the U.S. alone, The Force Awakens has made $70 million in 11 days. By comparison, it took Avatar 30 days to hit that mark.
The Force Awakens hit $1 billion worldwide over the weekend. It has now reached $1.16 billion, with $571.4 million coming from North America. It has grossed $589.7 million from foreign territories.
The Force Awakens is the seventh film in the Star Wars saga and first with members of the original trilogy cast in over 30 years. It's made Daisy Ridley and John Boyega stars overnight and was directed by J.J. Abrams.
