Star Wars: The Force Awakens is expected to become the fastest movie to reach $1 billion worldwide if it continues to do as well as it has been during the week. The film could hit the mark by Christmas Day.
Thanks to holiday vacations, the seventh Star Wars film has not stopped steamrolling over every other movie. It even had the highest-grossing Monday ever with $40.1 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has grossed $363.5 million since its record breaking Thursday night opening. It earned $38.1 million on Wednesday.
Outside of North America, the film has hit $400.4 million, bringing its global total to $765.9 million. If the film does end up hitting $1 billion worldwide on Friday, it will be the fastest on record, taking just 12 days. The current record is held by Jurassic World, which took 13 days to hit $1 billion over the summer.
The Force Awakens (reviewed here) was directed by J.J. Abrams and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver as new characters. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill all returned for the new movie.
While the film was guaranteed to be a blockbuster thanks to Disney’s never-ending marketing campaign, the film’s critical acclaim has certainly made it a must-see film. On top of that, the new characters have clearly connected with audiences, making many want to see it more than once.
