The Sundance Film Festival announced the line-up for the 2016 event, including films in competition and the NEXT slate.
Sundance does have a track record of introducing films that go on to have an impact on the awards season later in the year. Past premieres in Park City, Utah include Fruitvale Station, Whiplash, Beasts of the Southern While, Obvious Child, Tangerine and Precious.
This year, 65 films will be included in the U.S. Competition, World Competition and the out-of-competition NEXT section. Many of the films, especially those in the U.S. section, feature Hollywood stars.
Armie Hammer, Jackie Earle Haley and Gabrielle Union star in The Birth of a Nation, which was written and directed by Nate Parker (Beyond The Lights), who also stars. Antonio Campos’ Christine features Rebecca Hall and Michael C. Hall, while Anna Gunn and James Purefoy star in Meera Menon’s Equity.
Elisabeth Moss and Octavia Spencer headline Jason Lew’s The Free World and Nick Jonas can be spotted in Andrew Neel’s Goat. One of the films featured on day one is Chris Kelly’s Other People, which stars Jesse Plemons, Molly Shannon and June Squibb.
