A dinosaur that is believed to be the oldest one from the Jurassic period found in the U.K. finally has a name. It has been called Dracoraptor hanigani or “dragon robber.”
Details about the Dracoraptor were published in the journal PLOS One this week. It is thought to be a distant relative of the Tyrannosaurus rex and lived around 200 million years ago.
As USA Today notes, the bones were found at a beach in Wales by a pair of brothers in 2015. The University of Portsmouth said that a year, a fossilized foot was found in the same area by a paleontology student. The brothers were invited to name the dinosaur.
“We invited Rob and Nick to name this beautiful little dinosaur and they suggested ‘Dracoraptor’ after draco meaning dragon, the national symbol of Wales, and raptor meaning thief or plunderer,” paleontologist Dr. Dave Martill said in a statement.
The bones that have been found include the skull, claws, teeth and foot.
The fossils will go on display at the National Museum Wales in Cardiff.
