Don McLean, the singer/songwriter famous for “American Pie,” was arrested in Maine on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.
Cpl. Brad Woll told The Associated Press that McLean was arrested Monday and released on $10,000 bail.
McLean, 70, lives in Camden, Maine. The Wiscasset Newspaper reports that police responded to a 911 call at 2 a.m. Monday to his home, where he was arrested. Details of the incident have not been reported. He is expected to be back in court on Feb. 22.
McLean is best known for writing “American Pie,” one of the most iconic classic rock songs. In April 2015, he sold an original manuscript of the song’s lyrics for $1.2 million at auction. The song and album named after it were released in 1971
The singer has several tour dates planned, including a tour of Australia in March. He lives in Maine with his wife, Patrisha, and their two children.
