Guillermo Del Toro, whose Twitter page has continued to be a gift for film fans, confirmed on the social network Monday that Pacific Rim 2 is not dead yet.
Last week, there was word that the Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker was in talks to direct 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Voyage remake to stay busy since Universal and Legendary Pictures took Pacific Rim 2 off the release schedule in September. That news might have caused some Kaiju fans to think that Pacific Rim 2 has officially been cancelled, but Del Toro said that’s not the case.
“Pac Rim 2 cancelled? Don't believe everything you read. It's still going and I'll remain w it in one way or another,” Del Toro wrote.
The delay in getting a Pacific Rim sequel is simply because the $190 million movie didn’t make enough money at the box office. The Charlie Hunnam-starring film only made $101.8 million in North America and $411.0 million worldwide.
However, there might be some increased interest from Legendary now that it is owned by the Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group. The company confirmed this morning that it bought Legendary for $3.5 billion. Pacific Rim actually made more money in China than in North America with $111.9 million, so Wanda might push the studio to make a sequel.
