Filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro has found something to keep himself busy while he waits for Pacific Rim 2 to finally get a greenlight. He is reportedly in talks to direct 20th Century Fox’s remake of the 1966 classic Fantastic Voyage.
Del Toro’s involvement was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. In May 2014, David Goyer (Man of Steel) was picked to write the project, which is being produced by Fox and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.
Fantastic Voyage was about scientists who shrink themselves to fit inside a submarine to go inside another scientist’s body. The film had Cold War themes and was directed by Richard Fleischer. It won two Oscars.
Goyer wrote the treatment for the new film and will continue to work with Del Toro. The two previously worked together on Blade 2.
Del Toro and Cameron also worked together, although nothing came of their collaboration. Cameron worked with Del Toro on At The Mountains of Madness, but Del Toro has yet to be able to make that.
Del Toro also wanted to make Pacific Rim 2 as his follow-up to 2015’s Crimson Peak, but Universal took that off its schedule. That gave Del Toro time to find another project.
In other Del Toro news, he’s working with DreamWorks Animation for their Netflix series Trollhunters.
