Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios have officially broken up.

The Avengers director clarified in a new interview that after Age of Ultron, he will have no further involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase, but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron, and sort of know when it was done I was just going to stop," he said. "So I made a completely clean break - not because we had a falling out - just because I was like, 'I can't...'"

Whedon said he felt that if he was still providing his input on the new movies, he'd be there doing that every day and wouldn't do anything else. He also explained that he spent the last five years working on Marvel properties and now he feels it's important to do his own thing and to challenge himself.

While Whedon used to be the guy who contributed the most to the overall Marvel universe, it seems that now this position will be filled by the Russo Brothers, who will be directing Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2.
