LEGO has already proved in the past that it will push the limits of the minifigure design, but they had yet to unveil a figure in a wheelchair. That will change this year.
The company confirmed that the figure will be included in a set to be released later this year. It will be included in the LEGO City set “Fun At The Park,” as you can see in a video from the 2016 International Toy Fair. The wheelchair is being used by a child minifigure, who is wearing a hoodie and beanie hat.
The set also includes a baby minifigure in a carriage.
The set comes as toy companies around the world are trying to feature other body types and people with disabilities. On Jan. 28, Mattel also announced that it will finally release Barbie dolls of various body types, from petite to curvy.
As for the LEGO wheelchair figure, it is being welcomed with open arms online. Rebecca Atkinson, who started a Change.org petition asking LEGO to create one, wrote, “We’ve got genuine tears of joy right now," notes The Washignton Post.
