A 33-year-old woman, who became the mayor of a Mexican city on Friday, was fatally shot at her home on Saturday.

Newsweek noted that Morelos state Governor Graco Ramirez confirmed that the newly-elected Mayor of Temixco, Gisela Mota, was killed just one day after she formally took office.

The Associated Press reported that gunmen shot Mota at her residence and police arrested three people believed to be behind the slaying. There have also been reports that two other assailants were shot while being pursued by Mexican authorities.

Gov. Ramirez said that organized crime is to blame for Mota’s death, however, he did not say which drug cartel he thought was involved. Many Mexican mayors have been killed in the past by drug gangs.

Mota’s was a member of the Democratic Revolution Party, which said in a statement that she was "a strong and brave woman who on taking office as mayor, declared that her fight against crime would be frontal and direct."

The town of Temixco is home to 100,000 people and is about 60 miles south of Mexico City.
