Rock legends payed tribute to another rock legend this morning. The Rolling Stones and former Beatle Paul McCartney paid tribute to the late David Bowie on Facebook this morning.

The Stones posted a short statement on Facebook, calling Bowie a “kind man” and an “extraordinary artist.”

“The Rolling Stones are shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend David Bowie,” the statement reads. “As well as being a wonderful and kind man, he was an extraordinary artist, and a true original.”

McCartney shared a photo from 1985, taken by his late first wife, Linda McCartney. The singer made sure to stress how important Bowie was to the history of British music and to generations of music fans around the world.

“I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years,” McCartney wrote. “His star will shine in the sky forever.”

Bowie died at age 69 overnight after an 18-month battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, supermodel Iman, and their daughter. He is also survived by his son, film director Duncan Jones, from his first marriage.

"Very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together....
