CBS This Morning co-anchor Charlie Rose said today that he will interview actor Sean Penn, but not for another movie. The actor will discuss his controversial meeting and interview with Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.
El Chapo, who runs the Sinaloa drug cartel, was re-captured by Mexican authorities on Jan. 8. Saturday night, Penn’s interview with him went live on Rolling Stone and it was revealed that the interview may have helped authorities locate him. Guzman was reportedly trying to make a movie about himself, which is how he eventually got in contact with Penn.
During the Television Critics Association Press Tour on Tuesday, Rose revealed that he spoke with Penn on Monday night, reports Variety and they have decided to sit down for an interview. The logistics still haven’t been worked out, so it’s not clear when the interview will air.
“We are planning to do an interview about his experience and what happened to him and I look forward to that, as soon as all the things can be worked out,” Rose told reporters. “We’ll be able to sit down and I have a thousand questions for Sean. It’s a remarkable story.”
Rose only said that he didn’t talk much about Penn’s meeting with Guzman, since Penn wanted to save much of the discussion for the actual interview. Rose added that his long friendship with Penn was helpful in meeting with the actor.
“He and I have done interviews on the PBS program for 20 years on everything. I hadn’t seen him and I was interested in what happened so I went to talk about that,” Rose said.
CBS News confirmed the interview with a tweet this afternoon.
