As every Star Wars fan knows, if you can spot a character in a movie - even if he or she is barely on screen - the character deserves a whole backstory. That includes troopers, like the baton-wielding First Order Stormtrooper who fights Finn in The Force Awakens.
The trooper, who famously yells “Traitor!” and earned the name “TR-8R” online, does an official name. His whole story was posted on StarWars.com on Thursday.
His name is FN-2199, according to Greg Ruca’s book Before The Awakening. Nicknamed “Nines,” he actually served in the same squad as Finn, which might explain why he was really angry that Finn joined the Resistance. Art by Phil Noto also reveals that Nines has red hair.
Nines is also a member of the elite riot control squad, which is why he gets to carry the Z6 baton.
In the real world, Nines is played by veteran stunt performer Liang Yang. The person who got to yell “Traitor!” was David Acord, a Skywalker Sound sound editor who has worked on the Star Wars prequels, The Clone Wars, Rebels and - of course - The Force Awakens.
