The ‘surprise’ was ruined in May when on-set footage of the filming in Toronto showed a stuntman in a Batman suit jumping onto the Joke’s car. A version of that scene was then included in the San Diego Comic Con ‘First Look’ video.
Now, to completely ruin the surprise, director David Ayer confirmed to USA Today that Affleck did arrive on set to shoot a scene in the film.
“We made him fight,” Ayer, whose previous film was Fury with Brad Pitt, told the paper. “He’s awesome (as Batman). ... You really sense that but for the grace of God he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.”
Affleck was also interviewed, but couldn’t say much about his Suicide Squad appearance. Still, he thinks it’s going to impress audiences, despite being a movie only featuring DC Comics universe villains.
“It felt like I have such a cool cousin,” he said of Suicide Squad. “This thing that is so awesome is somehow related to me, and that was really exciting because it started to feel like a constellation of things, and I’ve never had that feeling.”
USA Today also posted two new photos from the film, which features Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Will Smith and Jai Courtney.
Suicide Squad hits theaters on Aug. 5 and a new trailer will be shown on The CW on Jan. 19. But you can see Affleck on Batman v Superman on March 25.
