Tori Spelling might have thought that everything becomes priceless once you use an American Express credit card, but the company is not laughing. American Express sued the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star for failing to pay nearly $38,000.
According to the lawsuit, first obtained by TMZ, Spelling has owed AmEx $37,981.97 since last summer. She hasn’t paid since, although she tried to pay $1,070 in June. Unfortunately, the payment was rejected by her bank.
According to the New York Daily News, Spelling failed to pay again in August, when the minimum payment was $1,477.
AmEx wants Spelling to pay the full amount now, including interest, plus the cost of going to court.
Spelling has faced money problems in the past. In October 2013, she told People that she only inherited $800,000 from her late father’s multi-million dollar estate. She said that she has had to cut down on the lavish lifestyle she was accustomed to. Because of the money problems, she and husband Dean McDermott couldn’t afford his vasectomy.
“It’s no mystery why I have money problems.I grew up rich beyond anyone’s dreams. I never knew anything else. Even when I try to embrace a simpler lifestyle I can’t seem to let go of my expensive tastes,” Spelling wrote in the book The High Life. “And then there’s my shopping problem. I’ve bought ridiculous amounts of stuff for the kids, clothing, toys, crafts.”
Spelling’s life has been the focus of several reality shows, including True Tori, Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood and Tori & Dean: Inn Love.
