A trio of new films hit theaters this weekend, including the raunchy Zac Efron/Robert De Niro comedy Dirty Grandpa. However, none of them are likely to top stronger holdovers.
Dirty Grandpa is being released by Lionsgate and also features Aubrey Plaza. According to TheWrap, the film took in $660,000 theaters from 2,000 theaters Thursday night. It’s expected to take in around $10 million, which will be much better than Efron’s previous film, We Are Your Friends.
The 5th Wave, a Sony sci-fi film with Chloe Grace Moretz, also had Thursday night previews. That film took in $475,000 Thursday night, notes Variety and will probably hit around $11 million.
STX’s The Boy with The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan, is also hitting theaters. The distributor did not have Thursday night showings.
Thanks to the winter storm slamming the Northeast and even parts of the South, the U.S. box office is expected to be very slow this weekend. Holdovers Ride Along 2 and The Revenant will likely end up coming out on top with under $20 million each. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will probably hold on for third place.
