A priceless antique was destroyed during the filming of The Hateful Eight and the museum it came from is not happy.
In an interview with SSN Insider, Hateful Eight sound mixer Mark Ulano revealed that the guitar Kurt Russell’s character smashes in the movie was actually a loaner from the Martin Guitar Museum and it being destroyed was an unfortunate accident.
”The guitar was from the 1870’s and was priceless," Ulano said. "What was supposed to happen was we were supposed to go up to that point, cut, and trade guitars and smash the double. Well, somehow that didn’t get communicated to Kurt, so when you see that happen on the frame, Jennifer’s reaction is genuine.”
Ulano said that immediately after the incident, everyone on set was pretty freaked out, although director Quentin Tarantino was happy he got a good performance out of it.
The Martin Guitar Museum has already responded to this interview, saying that they were not aware this is how the antique was broken.
“We were informed that it was an accident on set. We assumed that a scaffolding or something fell on it," museum director Dick Boak told Reverb. "We understand that things happen, but at the same time we can’t take this lightly. All this about the guitar being smashed being written into the script and that somebody just didn’t tell the actor, this is all new information to us."
Boak says that the museum will no longer loan guitars to film productions.
