The musical comeback isn’t only reserved for television. Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have signed up to star in one for Universal Pictures.

The project will be produced by Marc Platt (Wicked) and Adam Siegel of Marc Platt Productions, with Tatum’s Free Association and Gordon-Levitt’s hitRECord Films, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Gordon-Levitt came up with the original idea for the musical with Michael Bacall, who will write the script. It’s not clear what the plot will be, but it is expected to center on two pilots who go on an adventure. It will be rated R.

Bacall co-wrote Manic, which starred Gordon-Levitt, and also worked with Tatum on the 21 Jump Street films.

Tatum and Gordon-Levitt both starred in Stop-Loss and are more than ready to make a musical together. Tatum has danced in Step Up, Magic Mike and the just-released Hail, Caesar!. Gordon-Levitt frequently sings during hitRECord shows and had a famous dance sequence in (500) Days of Summer.

The best news out of this whole situation though is that it is an original musical comedy that a big studio is willing to make. Hopefully Lionsgate’s La La Land with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling does well in July and we might see this become a trend again.

Tatum just starred in The Hateful Eight. Gordon-Levitt was last seen in The Night Before and The Walk.
