While Deadpool continued its march towards becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, Lionsgate’s Gods of Egypt became the first big flop of 2016.
Deadpool grossed $31.5 million during its third weekend and is now at $285.6 million domestically. Amazingly, the only R-rated movies with bigger domestic totals are American Sniper and The Passion of the Christ, notes Box Office Mojo.
The Ryan Reynolds-starring movie also topped the international chart, adding $40.2 million from foreign territories this weekend. It is now up to $609.7 million worldwide. Yeah, we’re getting a sequel.
Directed by Alex Proyas, Gods of Egypt sunk, but still opened in the No. 2 slot with $14 million. It added $24.2 million overseas. Still, that’s awful, considering that the movie cost $140 million to make. The film stars Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Egyptian gods fighting each other.
Eddie The Eagle, with Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton, took in $6.3 million, while John Hillcoat’s Triple 9 opened to just $6.1 million. Risen took in $7 million in its second weekend.
It’s worth noting that Disney’s Zootopia has been doing really well in early international release. According to Rentrak data, the film has already opened in 31 territories and has hit $81.4 million before opening in the U.S. on March 4.
