Even though Donald Trump lost in Iowa, he might win in Norway. OK, there’s very little chance that he would actually win the Nobel Peace Prize, but he was nominated for the accolade.
Although the Nobel committee doesn’t release the names of nominees, those who receive the nomination letters aren’t barred from talking. That’s how the AFP learned that Trump was nominated. Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, told the AFP that she received a letter from someone who nominated the real estate mogul.
According to Harpviken, the letter claimed that Trump deserved the Nobel for “his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China.”
There are, of course, more legitimate nominees for the award. A group of university professors nominated the residents of the island of Lesbos in Greece for welcoming in thousands of refugees from crises in the Middle East. Pope Francis I was also nominated for the award.
According to CBS News, another nominee is Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman who escaped ISIS and has become a spokeswoman for women abused by the militant group.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee will have their first judging meeting on Feb. 29.
