Emily Blunt is going to have some big shoes to fill, since she is Disney’s choice to play the new Mary Poppins.
Blunt is now in talks with the studio to star in the sequel to Mary Poppins, Variety reports. According to the site, the actress has long been a favorite for the role ,since she worked with director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt on Into The Woods. Indeed, in September, the site Den of Geek claimed that Blunt was in the lead for the role, just days after plans of the new movie were first reported.
The new film isn’t going to be a remake of the 1964 classic with Julie Andrews, but instead is expected to use other stories from the P.L. Travers novels.
Blunt is expecting her second child, so it’s not clear if Disney might have to hold off plans on making the movie if they really want Blunt (and they really should because she’d be perfect). Her next film is The Huntsman: Winter’s War and she starred in Sicario last year.
Mary Poppins is a big property for Disney and remains one of the studio’s most beloved live action films. It was a major success in 1964 and was the first Disney film nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Disney took the movie’s timeless music to the stage in 2004.
