A pilot based on Lethal Weapon is in the works at Fox and will star In Living Color’s Damon Wayans Sr.

Wayans will star as Roger Murtaugh, the part Danny Glover played in the 1987 film and its sequels. As TheWrap notes, Warner Bros. Television still hasn’t cast the Martin Riggs part Mel Gibson played.

The pilot will be written by Matt Miller, who is executive producing under his Good Session banner, reports The Hollywood Reporter. McG, who worked on NBC’s cult series Chuck with Miller, is directing the pilot.

Executive producers also include Dan Lin of Lin Pictures and Jennifer Gwartz. Miller and Lin worked on ABC’s short-lived Forever last season.

The Lethal Weapon series will follow a similar plot to the movies. Murtaugh is a veteran LAPD detective who is paired with the dangerous Martin Riggs, even though the two don’t like working with a partner.

The film Lethal Weapon was written by Shane Black and directed Richard Donner, who directed all four films. They are not involved in the pilot, but THR reports that WBTV has their blessings.

Fox is really going all-in on movie-based pilots. The network is also working on The Exorcist and Training Day. This season, the network tried a Minority Report series, but that is likely cancelled.
