George Clooney and Amal Clooney met with German chancellor Angela Merkel Friday to talk about the refugee crisis in Europe.
Clooney is attending the Berlin International Film Festival, where Hail, Caesar! was the opening film on Feb. 11. His meeting with Merkel was also attended by former U.K. foreign secretary David Miliband, who is now the chief of the International Rescue Committee, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
Although the meeting was not in front of the press, Merekl’s spokesman, Steffan Seibert, tweeted a picture. He said that the Clooneys talked with Merkel about “refugee policies and their involvement,” as well as their commitment to the IRC’s work.
Germany has taken in more refugees from Syria than any other European country and Merekl’s work earned her the 2015 Time Person of the Year title. The country took in 1 million refugees in 2015.
On Feb. 10, Clooney got defensive at the Hail, Caesar! press conference when asked what he was doing to help the refugee crisis.
“I spend a lot of time working on these things, so it’s odd to have someone stand up and say, ‘So, what do you do?’” Clooney responded, reports Deadline. He then asked the journalist, “What is it specifically that you have done for the refugees?”
