While most of the country was focused on the Super Bowl this weekend, or digging out of snow, some moviegoers still showed up at the cinemas. The result was the same as last week though, with Kung Fu Panda 3 coming out on top.
The Dreamworks Animation film, which features Jack Black again, grossed $21 million, according to Rentrak estimates. That’s actually a decent hold from last week, when the film opened to $41 million. Kung Fu Panda 2 had a similar hold in its second weekend, when it grossed $23.8 million after opening to $47.6 million in May 2011.
Expect Kung Fu Panda 3 to stick around for several more weeks, as the film is the only major animated family movie until Disney’s Zootopia opens on March 4.
Hail, Caesar!, the latest film from Joel and Ethan Coen opened to $11.4 million and was the top newcomer this weekend. However, audiences were puzzled by the movie, which is more in line with the Coen Brothers’ past work than a traditional comedy. According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned a C- CinemaScore rating, so don’t expect this one to have a long life in theaters.
This was also the lowest wide opening for the Coen Brothers. Their previous film was 2013’s Inside Llewyn Davis, which never got a wide release and only grossed $13.2 million domestically during its entire run.
The Revenant came in third with $7.1 million. It’s now up to $149.7 million domestically. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is still playing in over 2,000 theaters, added $6.9 million. The film crossed $900 million domestically, becoming the first movie ever to do so.
The Choice had the lowest opening ever for a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, taking in just $6 million. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies opened to just $5.2 million.
