A man who participated in the Krispy Kreme Challenge, run by Park Scholars at N.C. State University, died on Feb. 6 at a Raleigh, North Carolina hospital after running in a portion of the event.
The unidentified 58-year-old man was taken to the nearby Rex Hospital after dropping out of the race. The event consists of running 2.5 miles to a Krispy Kreme store, eating a dozen donuts, then running back.
University spokesman Brad Bohlander said in a statement, "On behalf of the entire N.C. State community, our deepest sympathies go out to the runner's family members and loved ones.”
According to New York Post, the man opted out of the race after just one mile, complaining of chest pains.
All proceeds of the run benefit UNC Children's Hospital.
