Filmmaker Derek Cianfrance is widening his scope with his first period film, The Light Between Oceans, and has three major stars to work with. The film, which stars Michael Fassbender, Rachel Weisz and Alicia Vikander, received its first trailer today.

Released by Entertainment One, the minute-and-a-half-long trailer outlines the film’s story, which is based on the M.L. Stedman novel. It is set in World War I-era Australia, where a couple (Fassbender and Vikander) live in their lighthouse. Their peace is interrupted when a baby washes ashore and they take the young girl in as their own. A few years later, they meet the girl’s mother (Rachel Weisz) and struggle with the decision to keep the child or giver her to her mother.

This will be Cianfrance’s third film, following Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, both of which starred Ryan Gosling. Although Gosling is nowhere to be found here, it looks like the writer/director has another great film on his hands.

The Light Between Oceans hits theaters on Sept. 2.
