Sony Music finally responded to the legal fight between singer Kesha and producer Dr. Luke. Kesha has been forced to stay with the label, even though she has alleged that Dr. Luke raped and drugged her.
Back on Feb. 19, a New York judge refused to allow Kesha to record outside of her Sony contract and her contract with Dr. Luke’s production company, Kasz Money. The “Tik Tok” singer claimed that the company would not promote her records if they were made without Dr. Luke.
Sony attorney Scott A. Edelman told <https://gesnetwork.timesheetsareeasy.com/Login/a href=http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/25/arts/music/kesha-speaks-out-about-dr-luke-case-as-adele-voices-support.html?_r=3>The New York Times on Feb. 25 that she is allowed to record with Sony without Dr. Luke’s direct involvement. However, the label can’t cancel Kesha’s deal with Dr. Luke.
“Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party,” Edelman said.
Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, has denied all of Kesha’s claims. His attorney said on Feb. 22 that Kesha is allowed to record without him. The producer has claimed that Kesha’s own claims about sexual assault are vague.
“The New York County Supreme Court on Friday found that Kesha is already ‘free’ to record and release music without working with Dr. Luke as a producer if she doesn’t want to,” Gottwald’s attorney said. “Any claim that she isn’t ‘free’ is a myth. The sound decision Friday by the Court in denying Kesha’s motion for an injunction made it clear Kesha’s allegations of purported abuse were unconvincing and that she had no basis to void record contracts and copyrights.”
