A major cringe-worthy moment occurred during the 88th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday evening when Stacey Dash walked out onto the stage.
As USA Today noted, host Chris Rock introduced the controversial actress as the “new director” of the Oscars’ “Minority Outreach Program.”
Audience members and viewers at home did a double take before realizing it really was the Clueless star on stage. Dash wished everyone a happy Black History Month before disappearing backstage.
Her appearance left many people scratching their heads as to why she was even there and minutes after she stepped off the stage, the actress talked about her being at the award show via the blog, Patheos.
“Yes, I’m the actress from the South Bronx who has always dreamed of winning an Oscar. But God has a great sense of humor and this is my first encounter with one of my dreams of destiny,” Dash explained.
"When they added ME to increase the diversity, I’m sure many black people rolled their eyes. I’m not 'black enough,' they say. But guess what? I’ve heard that all my life. I would rather be a free thinking black than a cookie cutter black who thinks—and votes—just like all my friends."
She then opined about diversity in Hollywood and concluded with, “Anyway, this is a first. A beginning. So that’s who I am. Nice to meet you.”
A we previously reported, Dash has been in the news a lot over the past few months and took heat for comments she made regarding the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and speaking out against Black History Month.
After she walked off stage, social media of course lit up with everyone discussing the awkwardness that had just filled the room.
